Breaking Bad Habits and Replacing Them with Good Ones

As part of the 10-day health and wellness experience I’m participating in, we receive daily emails with tips on how to improve our lives. Today’s message was about mixing up our patterns and trying something in a brand-new way. The goal? To identify our habits and break free from those that aren’t serving us well.

The advice was to start small, perhaps trying something as simple as a new hairstyle or a new route to work, not because those would be life-changing in any way, but because the mere willingness to do something different might open a door to new possibilities.

I like the approach — focusing on the negative rather than the positive. But let’s face it, many good habits are adopted to tackle the bad ones. And breaking bad ones can be a challenge.

I was a chronic thumb-sucker as a kid, and I remember how hard it was to kick that habit. Even though I wore braces, I’m still reminded of how bad habits can create long-term consequences when I look at my smile in the mirror and notice my crooked bottom teeth.
