How I Saved Good Money on Broadway Tickets and You Can Too

A few tips on accessing discounted theater seats in New York City.

Every time I visit my daughter in New York I learn something new about how to survive in a city that’s immensely more populated than the town I live in and infinitely more expensive.

During my last trip, I discovered what not to do when seeking transportation from the airport into Manhattan. The taxi line is clearly marked, and Uber or Lyft offer similar fares. I’m not sure why I fell for the guy who approached me with a clipboard and a smile who said, “Need a ride, Ma’am? Follow me.” I should be grateful that the only consequence of my snap decision to comply was a fee three times as high as it should have been.

It’s easy to get ripped off in New York, but there are plenty of ways to avoid breaking the bank.

When I’m in town, I enjoy going to a Broadway show. I used to plan ahead and buy tickets from home in advance, accepting the fact that online ticket vendors charge exorbitant service fees. If you want to make sure you see a specific show on a particular date, maybe even choose your own seats, that’s probably your best bet. But if you’re flexible, here are some other ticket options that my daughter has introduced me to:
