Recently, I published a piece on Medium where I mentioned something I was ashamed of during college. No, I didn’t cause anyone great bodily harm or engage in any emotional abuse. But I’ve made mistakes. That’s for sure.

And the woman I am today is partly since I was allowed to make those mistakes without significant consequence. I wasn’t tried in the media or publicly shamed in any, and I went on to learn from those missteps. No one was harder on me than me, but I was able to pick myself up…dust myself off…and work on becoming a better version of myself.

That’s not to say I don’t believe in consequences. For example, my coworker was recently fired because she got overly intoxicated at a work event—an event that she was 100% responsible for managing. It pained me to watch someone I care about to suffer such a harsh reality, but I would have fired her too.

But, I’m bothered by some of the stories I hear about people being heavily judged because of mistakes they made many moons ago. People like Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. I don’t know exactly what happened in their situations, and I honestly don’t…
