Why I Play Favorites When It Comes to Buying Girl Scout Cookies

It’s more about the sales pitch than it is about the cookie.

It’s Girl Scout cookie season — the perfectly timed post-holiday campaign that offers the opportunity to keep the sugar rush rolling.

Move over Peanut Butter Blossoms. Make way for the Thin Mints!

Last week, I was approached by two different Girl Scouts. The first was a kindergartener from a local Daisy troop. I don’t know her family well, but I’ve seen them around the neighborhood. Holding a pen and order sheet in her tiny little hands, she rang my doorbell and greeted me with a smile before introducing herself. Then she launched nervously into an “elevator speech” that she had obviously practiced before ever leaving home.

“My name is _________. I’m a Daisy at _______ Elementary School and I’m selling Girl Scout cookies so my troop can ______________.”

Her mom stood a few steps behind her and watched nervously as her daughter struggled through the pitch. I took the order sheet from her hands and checked a few boxes without hesitation. The only reason I didn’t order one of every kind is that I knew she wouldn’t be the only one asking me to buy cookies. I have my regulars, so I always like to pace myself.
